Making Christ Known in Northern Virginia

Our Change-for Change Ministry provides an opportunity for each of us to make a difference in the lives of others, through the giving of our pocket coins. Once a month, during our worship service, each person, including the children, places in a bucket at the front of the sanctuary the pocket change they have accumulated over the past month.

These funds are used to support orphaned, abandoned, abused, and sick or dying children at the Rehema Home in Nairobi, Kenya. Rehema means “mercy” in Swahili.

Shepherd Gate has been carrying on this tradition for about 20 years, and this small financial sacrifice by each of us typically provides Rehema Home with over $700 annually.”

Rehema Home in Nairobi, Kenya needs your help

Orphaned, abandoned, abused, sick or dying: these are the children that find new life at Rehema Home. Rehema means mercy in Swahili. More than an orphanage; we are a true home supported by a global family, passionate about caring for our children and diligent in preparing them for their future. There are currently over 40 children at Rehema, ranging in age from two months to nine years old. Over half of these children are HIV+.

Irv and Ruth Schwandt
Irv and Ruth Schwandt who direct Rehema Home, have been serving as missionaries in Kenya since 1970. Irv is a graduate of Elim Bible Institute in Lima, New York. Ruth is a registered nurse and a State Certified Midwife. The Schwandts worked for four years in another home in Kenya which takes babies from birth to one year. About half of the babies admitted were HIV+. They found that with proper care, medication, and lots of love, between 90 – 95% of the HIV+ babies became HIV negative. Since that home only had facilities for babies, they felt that a home was needed for long-term care. The result? The formation of Rehema Home.Email: ischwandt@nbi.ispkenya.com
