Although Sparks are beginning to be able to read well on their own, they still need plenty of help from parents if they are to finish their books. Look through their books with them; they work through the stories of the Bible along with their verses. The books come with great read-along suggestions (like children stomping their feet to signify marching) to keep your child(ren) engaged. They also come with wonderful CDs that have tracks for every section in the book!
Awana has also put out a wonderful resource for parents of Sparks: Bookwalks. These take you through section by section with answers to commonly asked questions and suggestions for how to explain a verse or help your child learn it! And if you follow along month by month then your child will be done with their book by the end of the year. These can be found (along with a pacing tool) here: Sparks Bookwalks

| In order to make Wednesday nights as stressless as possible, we recommend the following:
- Put together an Awana bag. This should contain your child's Bible, their Awana handbook, and their uniform. This way only one thing needs to be grabbed on the way out the door and children will always have their handbooks. If you want an official Awana bag, there is one here: Sparks Handbook Bag
- Spend 5-15 minutes every week with your child, working on their handbook. Read the stories with them, and help them memorize the Scripture. The Sparks curriculum is not meant to be "crammed" on the night of Awana; it is meant to be worked on throughout the week.
- If you as a parent want to set an example for your children (show 'em how it's done!) then Awana has created adult-level handbooks that include the same verses as the equivalent Sparks book. These books can be found here:
And don't forget: have fun!! |
