Our Story

How it all started...

Shepherd Gate held its first service on January 26, 1986. Our history actually precedes this date. Most of our original congregation came from Christian Assembly Center in Vienna, Virginia. The founding pastor, Dan Duis, served in ministry with the pastor there, Derrel Emmerson, from 1974 until the founding of Shepherd Gate. Recognizing the continuing growth in the western suburbs, it became apparent that a church needed to be planted in the Dulles airport area.

Before our first service, we met for seven weeks of prayer believing that the foundation of our labors must always be preceded by prayer. For our first three years, we held services at Floris Elementary School. To accommodate our growing congregation, we moved to Benjamin Franklin Intermediate School in 1989. We moved into The Lee Jackson Building on Sullyfield Circle in 1992. We purchased 13 acres of land off Route 50 on Pleasant Valley Road and moved into our own building on March 24, 2002.

In August of 2023, we embarked on a new chapter here at Shepherd Gate.  With the retirement of Pastor Dan and Scotti Duis, Clint and Kami Collins moved from North Texas to Northern Virginia to resume the role of Senior Pastors.  Building upon the rich history of Shepherd Gate Church, a new vision is being forged so we can meet the needs of our growing community.

What was once fields, has not become one of the fastest growing areas of Northern Virginia.  Being positioned on the border of both Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, the population has grown to 1.5 million people.  God has positioned Shepherd Gate Church in a very strategic area to meet the growing needs of our community.
